A 4th-5th century Coptic textile fragment from Egypt, featuring a stylised dog, hare, and grapes woven in wool on a linen ground.
This textile fragment originates from Egypt during the Late Antique period, likely dating to the 4th or 5th century. It is a fine example of Coptic weaving, which often utilised a combination of linen for the ground fabric and wool for the decorative elements. The piece demonstrates the technical skill of weavers who worked within the Mediterranean tradition, creating small-scale figurative motifs that were often applied as decorative panels to larger garments or household linens.
The composition features two distinct figures rendered in a dark, contrasting wool against a lighter linen background. On the left, a small dog is depicted in motion, while to its right, a hare appears to be interacting with a cluster of grapes. The figures are stylised rather than naturalistic, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the era where clarity of form took precedence over anatomical precision. The horizontal bands of openwork or decorative stitching above the figures provide a structural contrast to the organic shapes of the animals.
Such fragments were frequently preserved in the arid climate of Egypt, which allowed for the survival of organic materials that would otherwise perish. The use of animal motifs, particularly those associated with hunting or pastoral scenes, was a common theme in the decorative arts of the period. This piece offers a glimpse into the daily aesthetic of the time, where even functional items were embellished with narrative or symbolic imagery. The simplicity of the design, combined with the stark contrast between the dark wool and the pale linen, creates a visual impact that remains clear despite the passage of over a millennium. It is a quiet, historical object that speaks to the continuity of craft traditions in the ancient world.
