A fine art print of a Heian period calligraphy fragment attributed to Fujiwara no Yukinari, featuring fluid kana script on dyed paper.
This work represents a fragment of the Sekido-bon Kokin wakashū, a celebrated manuscript of the Kokin wakashū, which is the first imperial anthology of Japanese poetry. Attributed to Fujiwara no Yukinari, one of the Sanze-ki or Three Brush Traces, the piece demonstrates the refined aesthetic of the mid-Heian period. Yukinari is credited with establishing the Way of Japanese Calligraphy, known as Wayō, which moved away from Chinese stylistic influences toward a more fluid, indigenous expression.
The calligraphy is executed in kana script, the phonetic Japanese syllabary that allowed for the graceful, cursive flow seen here. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, with the ink density and stroke weight varying to create a rhythmic visual experience. The paper itself is dyed, providing a muted, dark background that contrasts with the black ink. This specific fragment contains four poems, reflecting the courtly tradition of waka composition where the visual presentation of the text was as significant as the literary content itself.
As a master of the courtly style, Yukinari utilised a balanced approach to spacing and character size. The lines exhibit a controlled energy, with connections between characters appearing natural and unforced. This manuscript fragment provides insight into the technical precision required for Heian period literary production. The preservation of such works allows for the study of early Japanese orthography and the development of the kana script. The Sekido-bon is recognised for its consistency and the elegance of its brushwork, qualities that defined the standard for aristocratic writing for centuries. This print captures the subtle textures of the original paper and the depth of the ink, offering a clear view of the calligraphic technique employed by one of Japan's most influential historical figures.
