A collection of four biblical scenes depicting the stories of Isaac, Jacob, and Esau, rendered in pen and ink with grey wash by Dutch artist Cornelis van Noorde.
This composition by Cornelis van Noorde presents four distinct scenes from the Book of Genesis, rendered in pen and ink with grey wash. Van Noorde, a Dutch draughtsman and engraver active in the eighteenth century, demonstrates a clear narrative approach to these biblical episodes. The work is organised into a grid, allowing the viewer to follow the chronological progression of the stories involving Isaac, Jacob, and Esau.
The top-left panel depicts Esau returning from the field to sell his birthright to Jacob. The top-right panel captures the deception of Isaac, where Jacob, disguised in skins, receives the blessing intended for his brother. The bottom-left panel illustrates the vision of Jacob's Ladder, showing angels ascending and descending between heaven and earth. Finally, the bottom-right panel shows Jacob anointing the stone at Bethel. Each scene is framed individually, maintaining a sense of order and clarity typical of eighteenth-century book illustration.
Van Noorde employs a delicate use of wash to create depth and shadow within the architectural and natural settings. The figures are depicted with a lightness of touch, characteristic of the period's graphic style. The artist includes specific biblical references below each panel, such as 'Gen. XXVII v. 18', which anchors the visual narrative to the original text. The overall aesthetic is one of restraint and precision, focusing on the clarity of the storytelling rather than dramatic flair. This piece provides a window into the tradition of religious illustration in the Netherlands during the late eighteenth century, where such works were often produced for private study or as preparatory designs for printed editions. The monochromatic palette emphasises the draughtsmanship and the subtle tonal variations achieved through the application of ink wash.
