A refined surimono woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei depicting the poet Ono no Komachi, showcasing the technical precision of nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking.
This woodblock print is a fine example of surimono, a genre of privately commissioned, limited-edition prints popular among the literati of Edo-period Japan. Yashima Gakutei, a pupil of Hokusai, was known for his technical mastery of the medium, often incorporating metallic pigments and blind embossing to create a tactile quality. This work depicts the poet Ono no Komachi, one of the most celebrated figures in Japanese literature, engaged in the act of calligraphy. She is shown washing a sheet of paper in a basin, a reference to the legend of the 'water-washed poem' where she supposedly cleared her name of plagiarism by revealing the ink on a forged document when submerged in water.
The composition is balanced and refined, typical of the surimono aesthetic. The figure of Komachi is draped in layers of patterned robes, rendered with precise lines and a muted colour palette. The surrounding border features a subtle, embossed floral motif, which adds a layer of depth to the presentation. The inclusion of calligraphic text integrates the literary and visual arts, a hallmark of the cultural circles for which these prints were produced. Gakutei uses a controlled approach to colour, allowing the soft tones of the robes and the pale background to draw attention to the central action. The print demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship involved in nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the collaboration between artist, carver, and printer resulted in objects of great technical precision. This piece offers a glimpse into the intellectual pursuits of the period, where poetry and visual representation were closely linked in the daily lives of the urban elite.
