This work by Kano Tan’yū depicts the Four Elders of Mt. Shang, a classic theme derived from Chinese history. The narrative concerns four scholars who retreated to the mountains to escape the political turmoil of the Qin dynasty. Tan’yū, a central figure in the Kano school during the early Edo period, employs the sumi-e technique, using varying concentrations of ink to define form and atmosphere.
The composition spans a six-panel screen, a format that allows for a rhythmic progression of figures across the surface. The elders are rendered with calligraphic brushwork, their robes suggested through fluid, economical strokes. Tan’yū balances the negative space of the paper with the solid forms of the figures and the overhanging pine branches, a common motif in his work that provides a sense of natural shelter. The figures appear in quiet conversation or contemplation, their postures conveying a sense of scholarly withdrawal and composure.
Tan’yū was known for his ability to adapt traditional Chinese ink painting styles for the tastes of the Tokugawa shogunate. His approach here is restrained, favouring clarity and balance over excessive detail. The muted palette of greys and blacks focuses the viewer on the interaction between the figures and their environment. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the period, where the study of classical Chinese subjects was a pursuit for the educated elite. The work remains a clear example of the Kano school's mastery of ink wash techniques, demonstrating how a limited range of tones can create a sense of depth and narrative weight. The screen format encourages the viewer to move across the scene, engaging with the subtle shifts in ink density and the deliberate placement of each elder within the composition.
