A conceptual photograph by Aat Veldhoen, featuring a sculptural fly superimposed over a paused television broadcast.
This work by Aat Veldhoen captures a specific intersection between mass media and physical sculpture. The image functions as a photographic reproduction of a paused television broadcast, which Veldhoen has modified through the inclusion of a sculptural element representing a fly. The composition relies on the contrast between the flat, electronic glow of the screen and the tactile, three-dimensional presence of the insect form.
Veldhoen, known for his experimental approach to printmaking and photography, often explored the boundaries of how images are consumed and recontextualised. By capturing a still from a television set, he engages with the ephemeral nature of broadcast media, freezing a moment that would otherwise vanish. The addition of the fly sculpture introduces an element of physical disruption, challenging the viewer to distinguish between the captured broadcast and the artist-imposed object.
The aesthetic quality of the piece reflects the technical limitations and visual characteristics of mid-to-late twentieth-century television technology. The scan lines and the specific colour balance of the screen provide a backdrop for the dark, silhouette-like form of the fly. The surrounding figures, rendered in a gestural, sketch-like manner, appear to interact with the central subject, creating a sense of narrative ambiguity. This work avoids traditional representational modes, instead favouring a direct engagement with the medium of photography as a tool for documentation and artistic intervention. It remains a curious example of Veldhoen's interest in the interplay between reality and mediated images, presented here with the starkness of a polaroid-style frame.
