This work presents a series of narrative vignettes derived from the Tales of Ise, a tenth-century collection of Japanese waka poems and associated prose narratives. Attributed to the artist Satomura Genchin, the composition is arranged across a six-panel folding screen, a format common in the decorative arts of the period. The artist employs a technique where individual scenes are contained within rectangular frames, set against a ground of gold leaf. This application of gold creates a luminous surface that contrasts with the muted, monochromatic ink drawings.
The Tales of Ise follows the life of a courtier, traditionally identified as Ariwara no Narihira, through various romantic and social encounters. Each vignette captures a specific moment from the text, blending human figures with architectural elements and natural motifs. The style reflects the Yamato-e tradition, characterised by its focus on Japanese subjects and a refined, linear approach to depiction. The figures are rendered with delicate brushwork, while the surrounding space remains largely suggestive, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the written poetry and the visual representation.
Satomura Genchin demonstrates a precise control of ink, using thin lines to define the contours of the figures and the structures they inhabit. The repetition of the framed scenes creates a rhythmic structure across the screen, inviting the viewer to read the narrative from right to left. The use of gold leaf serves to unify the disparate scenes, providing a sense of continuity and opulence. This piece offers a window into the literary culture of the Japanese aristocracy, where the integration of text and image was a primary mode of artistic expression.
