A detailed Victorian wood engraving by Edward Dalziel, depicting an allegorical scene of a dog distracted from its duty by a passing hare.
This wood engraving, titled Force of Temptation, is a work by the British illustrator Edward Dalziel. It belongs to a series of prints derived from the portfolio of the German artist Moritz Retzsch. The image depicts a classical scene where a dog, tasked with pulling a small cart occupied by a woman, is distracted by a hare crossing its path. The dog abandons its duty to pursue the animal, causing the cart to veer off course and the passenger to lose her balance.
The composition employs a clear narrative structure typical of Victorian moralising art. The foreground features the figures in a state of sudden motion, while the background provides a wooded setting that frames the action. Dalziel uses precise line work to define the textures of the dog's fur, the folds of the woman's drapery, and the surrounding foliage. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of detail, particularly in the cross-hatching used to create depth and shadow across the grassy terrain.
As an allegorical piece, the work serves as a visual metaphor for human fallibility. The accompanying text explicitly links the dog's behaviour to the nature of temptation, suggesting that even those who are trained or disciplined may be led astray by sudden impulses. The print reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in didactic art, where visual narratives were frequently used to communicate ethical lessons to a broad audience. The work is a fine example of the technical proficiency of the Dalziel brothers, who were instrumental in the production of high-quality illustrations for books and periodicals during the Victorian era. The print maintains a balance between the literal depiction of the scene and its symbolic intent, offering a glimpse into the artistic values of the period.
