A powerful example of Zen calligraphy by the monk Jiun Onkō, featuring bold ink strokes that convey a message of spiritual detachment.
This hanging scroll features the bold, expressive calligraphy of Jiun Onkō, a prominent Buddhist monk of the Edo period. The work displays the phrase, 'For a hundred years I have been a person with no attachments,' rendered in vigorous, sweeping ink strokes. Jiun was known for his practice of 'bonji' (Sanskrit) calligraphy, yet this piece utilises kanji to convey a philosophical statement regarding the nature of detachment and the passage of time.
The brushwork exhibits a high degree of spontaneity, characteristic of the Zenga tradition. Each character is formed with varying pressure, creating a rhythm that moves from the heavy, grounded top character to the more fluid, elongated strokes at the base. The ink density fluctuates, allowing the texture of the paper to remain visible, which adds a tactile quality to the composition. The placement of the red seals provides a subtle visual counterpoint to the deep black ink, grounding the vertical orientation of the scroll.
As a practitioner of Shingon Buddhism, Jiun Onkō sought to strip away unnecessary ornamentation in his writing, preferring a direct transmission of thought through the physical act of calligraphy. This piece reflects his disciplined approach to the brush, where the movement of the hand is intended to mirror the state of the mind. The composition is balanced, occupying the vertical space with a sense of deliberate weight and motion. It is a clear example of how ink and paper can communicate complex spiritual concepts through minimal means. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, capturing the nuances of the original ink application and the aged quality of the paper support.
