A detailed Baroque etching by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, featuring a formal dedication to Livio Odescalchi alongside classical river deities.
This etching and engraving by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi depicts a grand fountain design, presented as a formal dedication to Livio Odescalchi, the nephew of Pope Innocent XI. The work functions as a title page or frontispiece for a series documenting the gardens of Rome. At the centre, a large cartouche displays the Odescalchi coat of arms, surmounted by a coronet and flanked by two heraldic eagles. Below this, the text of the dedication is inscribed, acknowledging the patron's interest in the intersection of nature and artifice within the Roman garden tradition.
The lower portion of the composition features two reclining river gods, rendered in a classical style. They are positioned amidst rocky, naturalistic terrain, with water flowing from urns into a basin. This arrangement reflects the Baroque fascination with hydraulic engineering and the theatrical display of water in aristocratic estates. In the background, the print offers a glimpse of a formal garden setting, complete with a secondary fountain and figures traversing the grounds. The use of line work is precise, capturing the texture of the stone, the movement of the water, and the heraldic details with clarity.
Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi was a prominent publisher and printmaker in seventeenth-century Rome. His workshop, located near the Piazza Navona, was a hub for the production of architectural and topographical prints. This work demonstrates the technical proficiency of his studio, combining cartographic precision with decorative flair. The print provides insight into the visual culture of the period, where the documentation of private gardens served as a status symbol for the Roman nobility. The composition balances the rigid geometry of the heraldic shield with the organic, flowing forms of the river deities, creating a harmonious visual narrative that celebrates both the patron and the aesthetic achievements of the era.
