Description

A detailed botanical study of pomegranate blossoms by Victorian explorer and artist Marianne North, captured during her travels in Tenerife.

Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented flora across the globe. This study of the pomegranate, executed during her time in Tenerife, demonstrates her characteristic approach to botanical documentation. North worked primarily in oil on board, a medium that allowed her to capture the specific textures and light conditions of the specimens she encountered in their natural habitats. Unlike many of her contemporaries who worked from dried herbarium specimens, North insisted on painting from life, often in challenging outdoor conditions.

The composition focuses on the structural qualities of the pomegranate plant. The orange-red blossoms are rendered with precision, contrasting against the dense, deep green foliage. North avoids the stylised conventions of earlier botanical illustration, opting instead for a direct, observational method that prioritises the physical reality of the plant. Her work is held in the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which she funded and designed to house her collection of over eight hundred paintings.

In this piece, the viewer observes the various stages of the pomegranate bloom, from the tightly furled buds to the fully opened, ruffled petals. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for the subtle gradation of colour within the leaves and the distinct, waxy sheen of the petals. North's work provides a record of botanical diversity as it appeared in the late nineteenth century. Her approach remains distinct for its combination of scientific accuracy and the personal perspective of a traveller documenting her surroundings. This print reproduces the original oil painting, maintaining the clarity of her observation and the specific palette she employed during her residency in the Canary Islands.

Artist Biography

Marianne North

North considered marriage a terrible experiment that turned women into a sort of upper servant. Her inheritance depended on staying single, and she kept it. Between 1871 and 1885, she travelled to fifteen countries in fourteen years, almost always alone.

She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.

She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
