Kamisaka Sekka was a central figure in the revival of the Rinpa school during the early twentieth century. This print originates from his celebrated collection, Momoyogusa, or Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, published between 1909 and 1910. The series demonstrates his ability to synthesise traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern design sensibilities. In this composition, Sekka depicts a traditional ox-drawn carriage adorned with wisteria. The scene draws upon classical motifs often found in Heian-period literature, where such carts served as symbols of aristocratic life. Sekka employs a flat, graphic approach to space, prioritising bold shapes and clear outlines over realistic perspective.
