A woodblock print from the Momoyogusa series by Kamisaka Sekka, featuring a traditional carriage adorned with wisteria against a golden background.
Kamisaka Sekka was a central figure in the revival of the Rinpa school during the early twentieth century. This print originates from his celebrated collection, Momoyogusa, or Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, published between 1909 and 1910. The series demonstrates his ability to synthesise traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern design sensibilities. In this composition, Sekka depicts a traditional ox-drawn carriage adorned with wisteria. The scene draws upon classical motifs often found in Heian-period literature, where such carts served as symbols of aristocratic life. Sekka employs a flat, graphic approach to space, prioritising bold shapes and clear outlines over realistic perspective. The large, dark wheels of the carriage provide a strong visual anchor, contrasting with the delicate, cascading blue blossoms of the wisteria. His use of colour is deliberate and restrained. The warm, golden-yellow background creates a luminous atmosphere, allowing the deep greens of the carriage and the cool tones of the flowers to emerge with clarity. The figures, rendered with minimal detail, contribute to the overall sense of quietude and historical reflection. Sekka was instrumental in introducing these traditional decorative patterns to a wider audience, bridging the gap between historical craft and contemporary graphic art. His work remains a primary example of how the Rinpa style adapted to the printing technologies of the Meiji and Taisho eras. This print captures the essence of his approach, where the decorative quality of the subject matter takes precedence over narrative complexity, resulting in a balanced and visually harmonious image.
