Description
A departure from his typical urban scenes, Maurice Utrillo's 'Flowers in a Vase' is a still life showcasing his signature impasto technique and muted colour palette. The painting features a bouquet of white flowers in a blue vase against a simple background.
Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955) was a French artist known for his paintings of Parisian cityscapes. Born Maurice Valadon, he was the son of artist Suzanne Valadon, who named him Utrillo after the Spanish engineer Miguel Utrillo, though paternity remained uncertain. Utrillo struggled with mental illness and alcoholism throughout his life, and his artistic career was encouraged as a form of therapy. He is particularly celebrated for his 'White Period' (c. 1910-1914), characterised by the use of white paint to depict the textures and tones of buildings in Montmartre. This still life, 'Flowers in a Vase', diverges from Utrillo's typical urban subjects, but retains his characteristic impasto technique and muted palette. The composition features a bouquet of white flowers, possibly hydrangeas, arranged in a blue vase. The thick application of paint creates a textured surface, giving the flowers a sculptural quality. The background is a simple, neutral tone, with a suggestion of a brick structure to the left. The colour scheme is restrained, dominated by whites, blues, and greens, with touches of pink in the flowers. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation, a departure from the bustling street scenes for which Utrillo is best known.
