Sōsetsu, a follower of the Tawaraya Sōtatsu school, employs the tarashikomi technique, where wet ink and pigment are dropped into still-wet areas to create soft, bleeding colour effects. This method allows for a naturalistic rendering of petals and leaves, avoiding rigid outlines in favour of fluid, organic forms. The composition spans the panels with a sense of horizontal movement. To the left, structured bamboo supports provide a framework for climbing peonies, while the right side opens into a more sparse arrangement of grasses and shrubs. The negative space, or ma, is used to balance the density of the floral clusters, allowing the viewer to appreciate the individual brushwork of each plant. The muted palette relies on earthy tones, soft greens, and subtle reds, which align with the aesthetic values of the Edo period. Sōsetsu was active during the mid-seventeenth century and is known for his contributions to the Rinpa school, a movement that prioritised decorative beauty and classical Japanese themes.
