Description
Flotta is seen across bright Orkney water, with a white lighthouse on its stone pier, low island fields opposite and purple flowers growing among the foreground rocks.
The lighthouse stands on a square blue-and-white base at the end of a long stone pier, its dark lantern and railings picked out against the water. Mooring posts, blocky harbour walls and black shoreline rocks make up the lower view. Across the channel, pale cliffs meet green fields, and a small monument rises from the rounded hill beyond.
Flotta's harbour edge is a practical point of arrival as well as a place to stop and watch the changing water. Visitors may recognise the approach by boat, while island residents can read the opposite shore and lighthouse as part of an everyday crossing. The view brings together pier, beacon and the low sweep of Orkney land across the channel.
