A serene Post-Impressionist depiction of the river at Joinville-le-Pont during a flood, rendered in soft, atmospheric tones.
Maxime Maufra, a painter associated with the Pont-Aven School, captures the atmospheric conditions of a river in flood at Joinville-le-Pont. The composition focuses on the rising waters, which have encroached upon the banks, partially submerging the trees in the mid-ground. Maufra employs a palette dominated by muted ochres, pale greys, and soft blues to convey the overcast, damp quality of the day.
In the foreground, a group of figures stands near the water's edge, observing the scene. Moored barges occupy the lower right, their dark forms providing a visual anchor against the expansive, light-filled water. The artist uses short, visible brushstrokes to build the texture of the water and the distant, hazy shoreline. This technique reflects his interest in the changing effects of light and weather, a concern shared by many of his contemporaries in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Unlike the more radical experiments of the Fauves, Maufra maintains a traditional approach to perspective and form. He balances the observational accuracy of the scene with a personal interpretation of the mood. The painting avoids dramatic flair, opting instead for a quiet, measured depiction of the river environment. The inclusion of the barges and the figures adds a human element to the natural event, grounding the composition in the daily life of the region. This work demonstrates Maufra's ability to render the specific atmosphere of the French countryside, moving beyond mere documentation to create a sense of place through colour and light.
