A poignant gouache by Cyprián Majerník depicting figures, both human and animal, caught in a flood. The earthy tones and expressive brushwork convey a sense of urgency and vulnerability.
Cyprián Majerník, a Slovak artist born in 1909, tragically passed away at a young age in 1945. Despite his short life, he left behind a powerful body of work often characterised by themes of social commentary and human suffering, rendered in an expressionistic style. 'Flood' presents a scene of both human and animal figures caught in a moment of crisis. The upper register depicts horses struggling against the current, while below, human figures are intertwined, seemingly overwhelmed by the rising waters. The palette is dominated by earthy tones of ochre, brown, and muted yellows, contributing to the overall sense of unease and urgency. Majerník's loose brushwork and expressive lines convey the chaos and desperation of the scene. This work, rendered in gouache on paper, captures a fleeting moment of vulnerability and the struggle for survival. As a fine art print, 'Flood' would bring a touch of poignant historical depth to any space, sparking conversation and contemplation. Its muted colour palette makes it a versatile addition to various interior styles, while its powerful imagery serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring human spirit.
