Description
At Five Lanes, a weathered stone wayside cross rises beside a winding country road, setting a calm foreground against Monmouthshire's gently rolling, tree-lined fields.
The tall shaft at Five Lanes stands on a stepped plinth, its carved cross silhouetted against pale cloud banks. Behind it, a narrow tarmac lane bends downhill between hedges and simple timber fencing. Bands of sunlit pasture climb the opposite slope, divided by dark tree belts and small clumps of woodland.
This view recalls the pauses built into rural journeys around Five Lanes: stopping at a junction, looking across the folds of the hills, then following the road out of sight. Residents may recognise the ordered fields and hedgerows that change with the seasons, while visitors can carry away the sense of a route that is as memorable as the destination.
