This work by Seki Shūkō captures the fluid motion of fish moving through water with remarkable economy of means. The composition relies on the interplay between negative space and subtle ink washes, creating a sense of depth and movement without the need for rigid outlines. The fish are rendered with delicate attention to their scales and fins, while the surrounding water is suggested through soft, sweeping gradients of grey ink.
Shūkō employs the traditional techniques of Nihonga, a style that emerged during the Meiji period to preserve Japanese aesthetic values while incorporating modern sensibilities. The presence of dark, vertical ink strokes provides a structural counterpoint to the gentle curves of the fish, suggesting reeds or submerged branches.
