A classic Yuan Dynasty ink and colour painting depicting figures in boats amidst a serene mountain and river setting.
Zhao Yong, the son of the celebrated artist Zhao Mengfu, produced this work during the Yuan Dynasty. The painting follows the tradition of literati art, which prioritised personal expression and the cultivation of the scholar-official identity over professional realism. The composition is divided into a foreground featuring gnarled trees and rocky outcrops, and a background of rolling hills that recede into the distance.
Two small boats occupy the water, carrying figures who represent the ideal of the recluse. This theme of the fisherman-hermit was a common trope in Chinese art, symbolising a retreat from the political turmoil of the era into a life of contemplation and harmony with nature. The artist employs a restrained palette, using ink washes to define the forms of the mountains and the texture of the foliage. The brushwork is deliberate, reflecting the calligraphic training essential to the literati painter.
The vertical format allows for a sense of atmospheric depth, as the distant hills fade into the pale wash of the sky. The figures in the boats are rendered with minimal detail, yet their presence provides a human scale to the vastness of the natural environment. This work demonstrates the technical precision and philosophical depth characteristic of the period, where the act of painting was considered a form of self-cultivation. The balance between the solid forms of the foreground and the ethereal quality of the background creates a quiet, meditative atmosphere. It remains a representative example of the scholarly approach to ink painting, where the artist seeks to capture the spirit of the subject rather than its outward appearance.
