A serene Nihonga composition by Hishida Shunsō, featuring figures on a raft amidst atmospheric, mist-filled mountains.
Hishida Shunsō was a central figure in the development of the Nihonga style during the Meiji period. This work demonstrates his mastery of the mōrōtai technique, a method characterised by the absence of traditional ink outlines. By relying on soft washes of colour and ink to define form, Shunsō creates an atmospheric quality that prioritises mood over rigid structure.
The composition features two figures on a small raft, positioned at the base of the frame. They are dwarfed by the immense, ethereal slopes that rise behind them. The mountains are rendered in subtle gradations of blue and grey, suggesting a vast distance obscured by heavy fog. This use of negative space is typical of the artist's approach, where the unpainted silk serves as an active element of the scene, representing the pervasive mist that defines the environment.
Shunsō sought to reconcile traditional Japanese painting methods with Western concepts of light and shadow. The result is a composition that feels both grounded in historical ink-wash traditions and modern in its execution. The figures are painted with minimal detail, yet their posture and the long poles they hold convey a sense of quiet labour. The overall effect is one of stillness, inviting the viewer to contemplate the relationship between the human subjects and the overwhelming scale of the natural world. This print captures the delicate balance of tone and texture found in the original silk hanging scroll, preserving the subtle transitions that define the mōrōtai aesthetic.
