A minimalist ink wash painting of a fish by the Ming Dynasty master Xu Wei, showcasing expressive brushwork and traditional literati style.
This work by Xu Wei demonstrates the expressive power of the xieyi, or sketching ideas, style of ink wash painting. Xu Wei was a prominent figure of the late Ming Dynasty, known for his unconventional life and his departure from the rigid academic standards of his time. His approach to the brush was spontaneous and emotive, prioritising the internal state of the artist over precise anatomical representation.
The composition features a single fish rendered with rapid, wet ink applications. The body of the fish is suggested through varying tones of ink, moving from deep, saturated blacks at the head to lighter, diluted washes towards the tail. The artist employs a technique where the brush is lifted and pressed to create texture, suggesting the movement of the creature through water. The negative space surrounding the subject is essential to the composition, allowing the viewer to focus on the economy of the brushwork.
Xu Wei often used his paintings as a vehicle for personal expression, reflecting his own turbulent experiences. The calligraphic quality of the ink strokes reveals a high level of control despite the appearance of haste. The red seals in the upper left corner provide a visual balance to the dark ink of the fish, grounding the composition. This piece is a clear example of the literati tradition, where the focus remains on the artist's individual spirit and the mastery of ink manipulation. It offers a minimalist aesthetic that fits well within contemporary interior design, providing a sense of calm and historical depth.
