A conceptual monochrome work by Alphonse Allais, featuring a blank white field that satirises traditional representational painting.
This work is a piece of conceptual art created by the French writer and humorist Alphonse Allais. It belongs to the Album primo-avrilesque, a collection published in 1883. The image consists of a blank white rectangle framed by decorative black borders, accompanied by the title in French: Première communion de jeunes filles chlorotiques par un temps de neige.
Allais was a member of the Incoherents, a group of artists and writers who favoured satire, absurdity, and the rejection of traditional academic standards. By presenting a completely white canvas to represent a scene of young girls in white dresses against a snowy background, Allais anticipated the development of monochrome painting and minimalist aesthetics by several decades. The work functions as a visual joke, relying on the viewer to supply the missing imagery through the prompt provided by the title.
This print captures the original publication's layout, including the ornate corner flourishes and the typography. It is an early example of avant-garde humour that questions the necessity of representational content in art. The piece is often cited in discussions regarding the history of conceptualism, as it strips away the physical subject matter to focus entirely on the idea or the title itself. The stark contrast between the empty centre and the detailed border creates a tension that defines the work's character. It remains a curious artefact from the late nineteenth-century Parisian literary and artistic scene, reflecting the era's interest in wit and the subversion of artistic norms.
