A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting a night-time fireworks display over the Sumida River in Edo.
Fireworks at Ryōgoku is a notable print from the series One Hundred Views of Famous Places in Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final year of his life. This work depicts the Sumida River at night, a popular location for summer festivities in nineteenth-century Edo. The composition is divided horizontally, with the dark, expansive sky occupying the upper portion and the river scene below. A single, luminous trail of a firework arcs across the deep indigo sky, while smaller starbursts populate the upper right quadrant. The use of a dark, saturated blue creates a sense of nocturnal atmosphere, contrasting with the lighter tones of the water. Below, the Ryōgoku Bridge stretches across the frame, crowded with figures observing the display. Numerous small boats, known as yanebune, drift on the river, their silhouettes adding texture to the water surface. Hiroshige employs a high vantage point, a technique common in his later works, which allows for a clear view of the bustling activity on the bridge and the river. The print demonstrates the artist's mastery of colour gradation, particularly in the transition from the dark sky to the lighter horizon. The inclusion of cartouches containing the series title and the print title is characteristic of the Ukiyo-e format. This image captures a specific moment of public leisure, reflecting the urban culture of Edo period Japan. The precision of the woodblock carving is evident in the fine lines of the bridge structure and the delicate rendering of the fireworks.
