A collection of fifty-six steel engravings from the 1830 edition of Samuel Rogers’ poem, Italy, featuring works by artists such as J.M.W. Turner.
This collection of fifty-six engravings originates from the 1830 edition of Samuel Rogers’ poem, Italy. The publication is widely recognised for its contribution to the development of book illustration in the nineteenth century. The project brought together a group of skilled engravers who translated the works of prominent painters, including J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Stothard, into the medium of steel plate engraving.
The technical precision required for steel engraving allowed for a degree of detail previously difficult to achieve with copper plates. This process enabled the production of large print runs while maintaining the clarity of the original compositions. The images capture the atmospheric qualities of the Italian countryside, featuring architectural ruins, dramatic cliffs, and expansive vistas. Each plate functions as a vignette, floating within the generous white space of the page, which directs the viewer's focus to the delicate tonal variations and the fine lines that define the forms.
The collaboration between poets, painters, and engravers during this period reflects the interest in the Grand Tour and the romanticised view of European history. These prints demonstrate the high standard of British craftsmanship in the early nineteenth century. The collection remains a primary example of how literature and visual art were integrated to create a cohesive aesthetic experience for the reader. By focusing on the interplay between light and shadow, these engravings offer a window into the artistic sensibilities of the era, providing a record of the sites that captured the imagination of travellers and artists alike. The prints are presented here as individual works, allowing for a closer examination of the engraver's skill in rendering texture and depth on a miniature scale.
