Description
Fethaland in northern Shetland joins two pale beaches beneath green headlands, with roofless stone huts, turquoise sea and grazing sheep spread across the open summer grass above the shore.
At the northern end of Northmavine, Fethaland was one of Shetland’s largest nineteenth-century summer fishing stations. Crews sailed six-oared boats far offshore in search of cod and ling. Ruined booths survive beside the coast, recalling the seasonal community that worked here.
Two curves of pale sand meet at a narrow grassy neck, with turquoise water on either side. Low stone ruins lie across the headland beyond, their empty interiors open to the sky. Sheep graze among rocks nearer the foreground. Gentle summer light picks out the white shore margins and the greener slopes, while darker blue sea extends towards distant land.
