This ink painting depicts a whimsical scene where anthropomorphic insects engage in a communal effort to transport a large pumpkin. The work belongs to the tradition of giga, or humorous pictures, which gained popularity in Japan during the Muromachi period. The artist employs a minimalist approach, using swift, calligraphic brushstrokes to define the figures of the insects. Their poses suggest exertion and coordination, mirroring human behaviour in a playful, satirical manner.
The composition is sparse, allowing the negative space of the paper to function as the environment. This technique draws focus to the interaction between the insects and their heavy burden.
