A pioneering work of conceptual art from 1882, featuring a monochromatic blue field that satirises traditional marine painting.
Alphonse Allais, a French writer and humorist, produced this work as part of his 1882 album, 'Album primo-avrilesque'. The piece consists of a solid blue rectangle framed by decorative borders, accompanied by the French caption: 'Stupeur de jeunes recrues apercevant pour la première fois ton azur, ô Méditerranée!' (Astonishment of young recruits seeing for the first time your azure, O Mediterranean!).
This work is a precursor to monochromatic painting and conceptual art. By removing the figurative elements typically expected in a depiction of the sea, Allais forces the viewer to engage with the title and the colour itself. The humour lies in the absurdity of the minimalist representation, which mocks the earnestness of traditional academic painting. Allais was a member of the Incoherents, a group of artists who used satire and irony to challenge the artistic conventions of the late nineteenth century. Their exhibitions often featured puns, visual jokes, and anti-art gestures that anticipated the Dada movement.
While the work appears simple, it functions as a critique of the viewer's reliance on representational imagery. By providing only a field of blue, Allais leaves the actual 'fear' or 'astonishment' of the recruits entirely to the imagination. The ornate frame serves as a deliberate contrast to the void within, highlighting the tension between the traditional presentation of art and the radical simplicity of the content. This print is an essential piece for those interested in the history of avant-garde movements and the origins of modern abstraction.
