This oil on canvas painting by August Macke depicts two women outside a shop window, rendered in bold colours and simplified forms typical of the Expressionist movement.
August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). His work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in depicting modern urban life. Macke's career was cut short by his death in World War I at the age of 27. 'Fashion Store' depicts two women standing outside a shop window, their backs to the viewer. One woman, holding an umbrella, is dressed in a long red skirt and a dark top. The other woman is wearing a light-coloured coat. The shop window displays colourful clothing and hats. Macke uses bold, flat areas of colour to create a sense of depth and movement. The painting's composition is simple, yet effective, drawing the viewer's eye to the figures and the shop window.
