A classic Yuan Dynasty ink painting by Zhao Yuan, depicting a serene farewell scene set against towering mountains and a flowing stream.
Zhao Yuan, an active figure during the late Yuan Dynasty, produced this work in the tradition of the literati painters. The composition follows the vertical hanging scroll format, a standard for Chinese ink painting. It depicts a scene of departure, where figures gather near a stream while a boat waits nearby. The towering mountain forms dominate the upper two-thirds of the image, rendered with dry brush strokes and light ink washes to suggest texture and geological structure.
The lower section provides a human scale to the scene. A gnarled pine tree stands in the foreground, its needles and bark detailed with precise, rhythmic brushwork. The figures are small, suggesting the vastness of the natural environment. The stream flows through the centre, providing a visual path that leads the eye from the foreground figures toward the distant waterfall and mountain peaks. The artist employs a variety of brush techniques, including hemp-fibre strokes for the rock faces and dotting techniques for the foliage.
Calligraphy and red seals appear in the upper portion of the scroll. These elements are integral to the work, providing context and provenance. The ink palette remains monochromatic, relying on the contrast between the dark, saturated ink of the trees and rocks and the lighter, diluted washes of the background. This approach creates a sense of atmosphere and depth without the use of colour. The work reflects the scholarly ideal of the period, where painting served as a medium for personal expression and the cultivation of inner character. The balance between the monumental mountain forms and the quiet, human activity below creates a contemplative mood, typical of the period's focus on the relationship between humanity and the natural world.
