August Macke's 'Farewell' captures a crowd of figures in a simplified, Expressionist style. The muted palette and faceless figures evoke a sense of melancholy and transience.
August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). His work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in depicting everyday life. Macke's career was cut short by his death in World War I at the age of 27. 'Farewell' depicts a crowd of figures, rendered in a simplified, almost abstract style. The figures are faceless, their identities obscured, and the scene is imbued with a sense of melancholy and transience. The palette is dominated by muted tones of brown, green, and red, with touches of yellow and blue. The composition is somewhat chaotic, with the figures arranged in a seemingly random manner. The painting's title suggests a theme of departure or separation, perhaps reflecting the artist's own anxieties about the impending war.
