A dynamic abstract composition by German Expressionist August Macke, 'Farbige Formen III' features interlocking shapes in a range of bright colours, creating a sense of movement and energy.
August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, one of the leading members of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). Macke's work is characterised by its bright colours, simplified forms, and interest in depicting modern life. He was influenced by a number of different styles, including Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism. His career was cut short when he was killed in action during World War I at the age of 27. 'Farbige Formen III' presents a composition of interlocking, simplified shapes rendered in a range of colours. The forms are not clearly representational, but rather suggest a sense of movement and energy through their arrangement and chromatic relationships. The palette includes reds, yellows, blues, greens, and pinks, applied with visible brushstrokes that add texture to the surface. The overall effect is one of dynamic abstraction, typical of Macke's exploration of colour and form in the years leading up to the war.
