A striking lithograph by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, featuring expressive figures and a unique, feathered apparition.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita was a Dutch graphic artist known for his mastery of woodcuts and lithography. This work, titled 'Fantasie', demonstrates his ability to manipulate light and shadow to create an unsettling, dreamlike atmosphere. The composition features two figures on the left, wearing distinctive caps, facing towards the right. Opposite them stands a figure rendered with a feathered appearance, created through a scratching technique that contrasts with the solid, dark forms of the other subjects.
De Mesquita often explored themes of the grotesque and the fantastic. His work frequently features distorted human forms and animalistic features, which suggest a preoccupation with the subconscious. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface creates a sense of depth and tension. The lines are bold and expressive, reflecting the artist's interest in the graphic potential of the medium rather than strict anatomical accuracy. The figures appear to exist in a space that is neither fully defined nor entirely abstract, allowing the viewer to project their own interpretations onto the scene.
As a teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Haarlem, de Mesquita influenced a generation of artists, including M.C. Escher. His own practice remained focused on the expressive power of the printed line. This piece is representative of his later graphic output, where he moved away from more traditional subjects to embrace a more personal, symbolic visual language. The texture of the feathered figure is particularly notable, showing his technical skill in varying the density of his marks to suggest different materials and surfaces. This print offers a glimpse into the imaginative world of an artist who remained dedicated to the craft of printmaking throughout his career.
