A delicate etching by Eugène Bejot depicting a view of the Seine in Paris, presented in a unique fan-shaped composition.
This etching by Eugène Bejot captures a view of the River Seine in Paris, specifically framed within the unconventional shape of a fan. Bejot, a printmaker known for his precise documentation of the French capital, employs a delicate line to render the architectural details of the bridges and the distant skyline. The composition draws the eye along the water, where the reflection of the trees and the moored boats creates a sense of calm movement.
The fan format was a popular decorative choice during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, often influenced by the influx of Japanese art into European circles. Bejot adapts this format to his topographical interests, allowing the curve of the fan to dictate the horizon line and the placement of the Pont Royal. The etching process allows for fine detail in the ripples of the water and the textures of the stone embankments.
Bejot often focused on the changing face of Paris, documenting the city with a steady, observational hand. This work avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring instead to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the river surface. The inclusion of the boats and the distant buildings provides a sense of scale, grounding the scene in the reality of early twentieth-century Parisian life. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency required to balance the constraints of the fan shape with the requirements of a realistic cityscape. It remains a clear example of the artist's ability to translate the atmosphere of the Seine into a compact, graphic form.
