A woodblock print from the 1787 book Famous Products of Ryūkō, depicting courtesans and seasonal decorations in the Yoshiwara district.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book Famous Products of Ryūkō (Ryūkō meibutsu shi), published around 1787. The work provides a visual catalogue of the Yoshiwara pleasure district, documenting the figures and customs associated with the area. The title, Ryūkō, serves as a poetic reference to the willow-lined streets of the district, while the term meibutsu refers to local specialties or notable items.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels. The right panel depicts a group of courtesans, their kimonos decorated with patterns that reflect the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period. Their hair is styled in elaborate arrangements, typical of the high-ranking women of the pleasure quarters. The left panel introduces a more symbolic element, featuring a kadomatsu, a traditional Japanese decoration made of pine and bamboo, placed near a water barrel. This inclusion suggests a seasonal context, specifically the New Year period, which was a time of significant activity and celebration within the district.
Kabocha Sōen employs a refined line quality, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition, to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, greens, and warm paper tones to create a balanced visual experience. The text integrated into the upper sections of the print consists of kyōka, or comic verse, which was a popular literary form among the urban population of the time. These poems often provide commentary on the subjects depicted, adding a layer of wit to the visual representation. This print functions as both a record of contemporary fashion and a piece of social documentation, capturing the atmosphere of the Yoshiwara through a combination of illustration and calligraphy.
