A 1944 expressionist painting by Max Weber depicting a group of figures in traditional attire gathered around a table.
Max Weber was a Russian-born American painter who helped introduce European modernism to the United States. By the 1940s, his style shifted from his earlier Cubist and Futurist experiments toward a more expressive, figurative approach. This period often featured subjects from his Jewish heritage, rendered with gestural lines and a sense of physical movement. Family Reunion depicts a group of figures gathered around a table. The composition includes three men wearing traditional hats and a woman in a red dress. Weber uses heavy, dark outlines to define the forms, creating a sense of urgency. The figures are elongated and slightly distorted, which is characteristic of his later expressionist phase. Weber studied under Arthur Wesley Dow in New York and later travelled to Paris, where he encountered the work of Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse. These influences are visible in his treatment of space and colour. In this specific work, the spatial relationships are compressed. The table and figures occupy a shallow foreground, which increases the sense of intimacy and tension within the group. The man on the left is depicted in a dynamic pose, with his arms raised and his body angled toward the centre. His red coat provides a strong vertical element that balances the composition. Opposite him, the woman in the red dress serves as a quiet counterpoint. Her profile is clearly defined against the more sketch-like treatment of the men behind her. The use of black ink-like lines suggests the influence of traditional printmaking or calligraphy on Weber's painting technique. The faces of the men are highly individualised despite the distorted style. Their expressions convey a sense of serious conversation or contemplation. By using a limited palette of blues and greys, accented by ochre, Weber ensures that the red garments remain the primary visual interest. This choice directs the eye across the canvas, following the narrative of the reunion. The work avoids sentimentality, instead presenting a direct view of domestic life.
