A refined Neoclassical engraving by Raphael Morghen, depicting the family of Princess Bariatinski with classical architectural elements.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen depicts the family of Princess Bariatinski, a work historically misidentified as the family of Holstein-Beck. Morghen, a master of the burin, was celebrated for his technical precision and his ability to translate the tonal qualities of painting into the medium of engraving. His work often involved the reproduction of classical subjects or contemporary portraiture, reflecting the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The composition follows the conventions of Neoclassical portraiture. A seated woman occupies the foreground, her posture relaxed yet formal, while three other figures stand behind her. A classical bust rests on a pedestal, acting as a visual anchor that connects the family to the traditions of antiquity. The drapery, architectural elements, and the refined attire of the subjects suggest a setting of aristocratic status. Morghen employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to define the textures of the clothing, the smooth surface of the marble bust, and the soft modelling of the faces.
Technically, the print demonstrates the high level of control Morghen exerted over the copper plate. The light source is managed to create a sense of volume, with shadows providing depth to the architectural background. The inclusion of a coat of arms at the base of the print indicates its formal nature, likely commissioned to commemorate the family unit. This piece offers a view into the social and artistic expectations of the period, where the marriage of classical allusion and personal identity was a common pursuit for the European elite. The work remains a fine example of the reproductive printmaking tradition that allowed such images to circulate among collectors and connoisseurs of the era.
