A detailed woodblock print from the Meiji era, documenting traditional ikebana flower arrangements with precise, delicate line work.
This woodblock print originates from the Meiji shinsen risshō senkashiki, a publication documenting the formalised aesthetics of ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Yagi Unkei produced this work during the Meiji era, a period marked by the codification of traditional arts alongside the introduction of Western printing techniques. The print displays two distinct arrangements, each presented with the precision required for instructional manuals of the time.
The left composition features a cluster of chrysanthemums, rendered with attention to the organic growth patterns of the stems and the density of the blooms. The arrangement is framed by a circular line, a common device in period manuals to define the spatial boundaries of the display. The right composition depicts irises, characterised by their vertical, slender leaves and sparse, elegant flower heads. These are set within a simple, rounded vessel, demonstrating the balance between the plant material and the container.
The aesthetic approach is one of clarity and restraint. The lines are fine and controlled, reflecting the technical proficiency of the woodblock carvers who translated the original ink drawings into print. The paper tone is aged, providing a neutral backdrop that allows the monochrome ink to remain the primary focus. Such prints served as essential references for practitioners of the time, documenting the specific angles, heights, and proportions deemed correct for various floral species. By isolating these arrangements on the page, the artist provides a clear view of the structural logic inherent in the ikebana tradition. This print offers a window into the late nineteenth-century Japanese approach to botanical study and the systematic preservation of cultural practices through printed media.
