A refined Art Nouveau bookplate design by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst, featuring a stylised moonlit coastal scene in a circular format.
This circular bookplate, or ex libris, was designed by the Dutch artist Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst for his nephew, the poet Adriaan Roland Holst. The composition reflects the aesthetic principles of the turn of the century, blending symbolic imagery with the clean, linear qualities associated with the Art Nouveau movement. Within the circular frame, the artist depicts a stylised coastal scene, featuring a crescent moon suspended above a dark horizon line. Below, a craggy rock formation emerges from the water, providing a sense of grounded weight to the ethereal sky above. The lettering, which follows the curve of the border, is integrated into the design, demonstrating the artist's focus on the unity of text and image.
Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst was a significant figure in the Dutch art world, known for his work in graphic design, illustration, and mural painting. His style often incorporated elements of symbolism and a disciplined approach to form, which is evident in the balanced arrangement of this small-scale work. The use of a circular format creates a self-contained world, a common motif in personal bookplates of the period. The contrast between the dark, solid shapes of the rock and the lighter, more fluid lines of the moon and waves creates a visual tension that draws the eye to the centre of the print. This piece serves as a clear example of the artist's ability to distil complex themes into a compact, graphic form. It reflects the broader interest in personal identity and the craft of book collecting that defined the era, where the ex libris became a medium for artistic expression and individual character.
