A delicate ex-libris print by Félix Hilaire Buhot, featuring a dragonfly and butterfly rendered in the style of late nineteenth-century Japonisme.
Félix Hilaire Buhot was a French printmaker known for his technical experimentation and his engagement with the aesthetic principles of Japonisme. This ex-libris, or bookplate, demonstrates his interest in the delicate balance between naturalistic observation and decorative composition. The work features a central etched panel depicting a dragonfly in flight alongside a butterfly, positioned above a cluster of lotus leaves and blossoms. The fine, precise lines of the etching contrast with the surrounding field of yellow, which is punctuated by a speckled texture and overlaid with faint, red-toned calligraphic elements.
Buhot often incorporated unconventional techniques into his prints, frequently using multiple plates or varied inking processes to achieve unique atmospheric effects. His work reflects the late nineteenth-century fascination with Eastern art, particularly the asymmetrical compositions and focus on flora and fauna found in Japanese woodblock prints. The inclusion of an ex-libris design highlights the personal nature of such commissions, where the artist would create a bespoke mark of ownership for a bibliophile. The composition is contained within a rectangular frame, yet the surrounding space is treated with a sense of spontaneity, typical of Buhot's approach to the printed surface. By combining traditional etching methods with a more experimental use of colour and texture, Buhot created a work that functions both as a functional bookplate and as a distinct artistic statement. The interplay between the dark, detailed etching and the lighter, textured background creates a sense of depth and visual interest, inviting close inspection of the individual motifs.
