This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige belongs to the series Famous Places in Kyoto, produced during the mid-19th century. The composition captures a sudden summer downpour at the Tadasu River, a location known for its proximity to the Shimogamo Shrine. Hiroshige employs his characteristic diagonal lines to represent the falling rain, a technique that effectively conveys the atmospheric conditions of the scene.
In the foreground, figures cross a narrow wooden bridge, shielding themselves with paper umbrellas. Their hurried postures suggest the urgency of seeking cover from the weather. To the left and right, tea houses extend over the water, their open structures allowing patrons to observe the rain while remaining sheltered. The interior of these buildings reveals small groups of people engaged in conversation or rest, providing a human element to the natural setting.
