A woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting two Western men observing the sunset at Motomura, a classic example of nineteenth-century Yokohama-e.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the mid-nineteenth century as Japan opened its ports to international trade. The work depicts two Western men, dressed in military-style uniforms and civilian attire, observing the sunset at Motomura. In the background, two Japanese figures appear to gesture towards the horizon, creating a narrative of cross-cultural encounter.
Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was prolific in his documentation of foreign visitors. His approach to these subjects often involved a blend of traditional Japanese print techniques and an attempt to render Western features and clothing. The composition utilises a clear division between the foreground figures and the architectural structure on the left, which frames the view of the distant trees and the sky. The colour palette is characteristic of the period, featuring flat areas of green, red, and blue, applied with the precision typical of the Utagawa school.
The print serves as a record of the curiosity surrounding the arrival of foreigners in Yokohama. The inclusion of the hexagonal cartouche, a common feature in series of this type, provides context for the location. The figures are rendered with the stylised proportions common to the era, reflecting how Japanese artists interpreted the appearance of Europeans. This piece offers a glimpse into the social atmosphere of the Bakumatsu period, where the influx of new technology, fashion, and people transformed the visual culture of Japan. The print is a fine example of how woodblock artists adapted their craft to satisfy the public demand for information about the outside world, capturing the novelty of these interactions through a distinct aesthetic lens.
