A portrait of Etienne Chevalier and Saint Stephen, this panel from the Melun Diptych is a masterpiece of French Renaissance painting by Jean Fouquet.
This panel is the left wing of the Melun Diptych, commissioned by Etienne Chevalier, the treasurer to King Charles VII of France. The painting depicts Chevalier, a man of significant political influence, kneeling in prayer. He is presented by his patron saint, Saint Stephen, who is identifiable by the stone resting upon the book he holds, a reference to his martyrdom by stoning.
Jean Fouquet demonstrates a mastery of the Northern Renaissance style, blending meticulous detail with a sculptural approach to form. The figures possess a tangible, physical presence, rendered with smooth transitions of light and shadow. Chevalier wears a deep red robe with fur trim, while Saint Stephen is dressed in a dalmatic of blue and gold. The architectural setting behind them features classical elements, reflecting the influence of Italian art on Fouquet following his travels to Rome.
The composition is balanced and precise. The artist captures the distinct facial features of the donor with clinical accuracy, avoiding idealisation. The textures of the fabric, the smooth skin, and the polished stone are rendered with technical rigour. This work provides a window into the visual culture of the French court during the mid-fifteenth century, showing the intersection of personal piety and social status. The original diptych was separated during the French Revolution, with this panel now held in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, while the right wing, depicting the Virgin and Child, resides in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
