Description

An eighteenth-century equestrian portrait by the Indian artist Bakhta, featuring a nobleman on horseback rendered in ink and watercolour.

This work by the artist Bakhta, active in the mid-eighteenth century, represents the stylistic traditions of the Rajasthani school of painting. The composition depicts a nobleman mounted upon a dappled horse, captured in a profile view that emphasises the subject's status and martial bearing. The artist employs a clear, linear approach, using fine ink outlines to define the form of the rider and the animal. The horse, rendered with a long, flowing mane, is shown in a dynamic gait, while the rider holds a spear, suggesting a narrative of travel or hunt.

The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft greys, and touches of red on the horse's hooves and trappings. The background remains unpainted, a common feature in preparatory studies or sketches from this period, which allows the viewer to focus on the draughtsmanship. The artist pays attention to the details of the nobleman's attire, including his turban and the folds of his garment, as well as the decorative elements of the saddle and bridle.

Bakhta was known for his work in the courtly traditions of Rajasthan, where such equestrian portraits served to document the appearance and equipment of the nobility. The work demonstrates a balance between observation and the conventionalised forms of the era. The lack of a complex background ensures that the interaction between the rider and his mount remains the primary subject. This piece provides insight into the technical methods of Indian miniature painting, where the initial ink sketch served as the foundation for the final composition. The work is preserved on paper, showing the natural ageing of the material, which adds to its historical character.
