Carl Rottmann, a German painter associated with the Romantic movement, travelled to Greece in 1834 at the request of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. This commission resulted in a series of works documenting the Greek terrain, intended for the Hofgarten arcades in Munich. His approach to these subjects combined topographical accuracy with a specific atmospheric quality, often focusing on the interplay between light and the rugged Mediterranean geography.

In this watercolour, Rottmann depicts the coastal region of Epidauros. The composition is structured around a wide, panoramic view that stretches from the foreground rocks towards the distant sea.
