A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Jan Lievens, portraying the physician Ephraim Bonus with technical precision and tonal depth.
This etching by Jan Lievens depicts the physician Ephraim Bonus, a figure of some note within the Sephardic Jewish community of seventeenth-century Amsterdam. Lievens, a contemporary and early associate of Rembrandt, demonstrates his technical command of the etching needle here. The composition presents the subject in a seated, three-quarter view, resting his hand upon a hat. The treatment of the velvet garment, with its dense hatching and cross-hatching, conveys a tactile sense of the fabric's weight and texture.
Lievens employs a controlled use of light and shadow to model the features of the sitter. The face is rendered with careful attention to the lines of age and the specific character of the subject, while the background remains relatively subdued, featuring a column that provides a sense of architectural space. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base, identifying the sitter as a medical practitioner, aligns with the conventions of formal portraiture of the period.
This work reflects the broader interest in individualised portraiture that characterised the Dutch Golden Age. Lievens captures a sense of gravity and intellectual presence in his subject. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance descriptive detail with a cohesive tonal arrangement. As an example of seventeenth-century printmaking, it offers a clear view into the stylistic priorities of the era, where the focus remained on the psychological depth of the sitter and the precise rendering of form through line. The work is a fine representation of the portrait tradition in the Netherlands, showing the influence of the period's rigorous approach to observation and the mastery of the etching medium.
