This engraving by Jacob Matham depicts the personification of Envy, or Invidia, a common subject in Renaissance and Mannerist art. Matham, a pupil of Hendrick Goltzius, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the figure and the depth of the arched niche. The figure is shown with wild, serpentine hair and a gaunt expression, clutching a snake in her left hand while biting into another, a visual metaphor for the self-consuming nature of envy.

The composition is framed within a classical niche, a device frequently employed by Dutch printmakers of the period to provide a sense of architectural structure. At the top corners, two small shields are present, adding a heraldic element to the allegorical scene. The Latin inscription at the base reads: 'Invidia asperius nihil est, nec acerbius usquam, tabificum pravis malum et exitiale venenum.' This translates to a warning that nothing is more harsh or bitter than envy, which acts as a wasting evil and a deadly poison to the wicked.

Matham was a key figure in the Haarlem school of printmaking. His work often reflects the influence of Goltzius, particularly in the exaggerated, muscular anatomy and the dynamic, twisting posture of the figure. This print is part of a series representing the Seven Deadly Sins, a popular theme for didactic and moralising art during the late sixteenth century. The precision of the line work and the dramatic chiaroscuro effect created by the dense background shading illustrate the high level of craftsmanship expected from the Dutch printmaking tradition of the era. The print serves as a clear example of how classical allegory was adapted to convey moral lessons in a visual format accessible to the educated public of the time.
