An atmospheric etching by Otto H. Bacher depicting the entrance to the Grand Canal in Venice, featuring the Santa Maria della Salute.
This etching by Otto H. Bacher captures the architectural character of Venice during the late nineteenth century. Bacher, an American artist who spent significant time in Europe, became associated with the Etching Revival movement. His work often focused on the interplay of light and structure within urban environments.
The composition features the Santa Maria della Salute in the distance, its dome rising above the Venetian buildings. In the foreground, Bacher employs fine, precise lines to render the water of the Grand Canal, the wooden pilings, and the gondolas. The artist uses the etching needle to create varying densities of cross-hatching, which define the shadows on the building facades and the reflections on the water surface. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with the period of production.
Bacher was a contemporary of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and their shared interest in the graphic possibilities of the etching medium is evident in the economy of line used here. Rather than filling the entire plate with detail, Bacher leaves areas of the paper blank to suggest the bright, reflective quality of the Venetian light. This approach allows the viewer to focus on the essential forms of the city. The work provides a clear view of the canal entrance, documenting the maritime activity and the specific architectural silhouettes that defined the city at the time. The print is a technical study of perspective and atmospheric depth, achieved through the careful application of ink and the physical impression of the plate into the paper.
