A detailed 1544 engraving by Sebald Beham depicting an ensign and a drummer, referencing the German Peasants' War.
This engraving by Sebald Beham depicts two figures associated with the German Peasants' War of 1525. Beham, a member of the Little Masters, was known for his precise and small-scale prints. The composition features an ensign, carrying a flag, and a drummer, both dressed in the typical military attire of the mid-sixteenth century. The figures are rendered with clear, controlled lines that define the texture of their clothing, the chainmail, and the drum.
Textual elements are integrated into the composition, with inscriptions identifying the subjects and the historical context of the 1525 conflict. The date 1544 and Beham's monogram appear in the lower right corner, confirming the work was produced nearly two decades after the events depicted. This temporal distance suggests a retrospective interest in the social upheavals of the era. The figures stand on a simple patch of ground, with the background left blank to focus attention on their posture and equipment.
Beham's technique demonstrates the technical proficiency common among Nuremberg printmakers of the period. The cross-hatching is used sparingly to suggest volume and shadow, while the contours remain sharp and descriptive. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Reformation era, where military figures were frequently documented in graphic art. The work is a representative example of the small-format engravings that circulated among collectors and scholars in the sixteenth century, providing a record of costume and contemporary history.
