A detailed woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a Western sailing vessel and an officer, created during the opening of Japanese ports.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the mid-nineteenth century as Japan opened its ports to foreign trade. These prints functioned as visual news reports for a Japanese public curious about the appearance and technology of Western visitors. The composition features a large, multi-masted sailing vessel, rendered with a blend of traditional Japanese woodblock techniques and an attempt to capture the specific mechanical details of foreign naval architecture.
In the upper left corner, a circular inset portrait depicts a Western figure, likely an English naval officer or merchant, providing a human element to the technical subject. The ship itself is depicted with a focus on its rigging, sails, and hull, reflecting the fascination with Western maritime engineering. The inclusion of text blocks, or cartouches, provides descriptive information about the vessel, its origins, and its capabilities, typical of the educational intent behind many Yokohama-e works. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the characteristic blue tones of the sea and sky, contrasted against the dark, solid form of the ship and the red accents of the flags and cartouches.
Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became one of the most prolific artists in the production of these foreign-themed prints. His work captures a specific moment in Japanese history where the isolationist policies of the Edo period began to yield to international contact. The print serves as a record of how Western technology was perceived and documented by Japanese artists of the time, balancing the need for accurate representation with the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The lines are precise, defining the complex structure of the ship's masts and ropes, while the sea is represented through simplified, rhythmic patterns that suggest movement without attempting full Western-style perspective.
